NANTAHAHALA GORGE, Jan. 15, 2015 – Endless River Adventures (ERA) is one of two outfitters to be allocated a newly released hard boat permit on the Chattooga River. The US Forest Service permit allows ERA to provide outfitter and guide services –including instruction, for whitewater kayak and canoeing on the Chattooga River.
“We could not be more honored to be considered,” shared Ken Kastorff, co founder of Endless River Adventures and one of the early pioneers of instruction on the Chattooga River. “There is no more special river in the southeast. Adding the Chattooga to our line up of rivers that includes the Nantahala, Ocoee and Cheoah means we can offer our guests the best of the best here in the Southeast.”
Considered the “Crown Jewel” of the southeast, the Chattooga was the first river east of the Mississippi to be granted the Wild & Scenic designation. Part of its appeal is that it is a free-flowing river, meaning the water levels are not regulated by scheduled releases, as are many of the rivers in the southeast. Commercial rafting and boating can only be offered by permitted outfitters.
The Chattooga holds a special place in paddlers’ hearts, many who started paddling the river in the early 70’s and who still spend time paddling the river today. Doug Woodward, one of the original Chattooga paddlers summed it up in an article titled No Turning Back, “Little did I know then how this river would affect my life in the years to follow. How I would be caught up in the Deliverance saga, stumble onto a working moonshine stills… or that I would be kayaking this river with Jimmy Carter, working for Wild and Scenic status, or spending years safely guiding people on breathtaking river-rafting experiences.”
Endless River Adventures will share the magic of this watershed though private guiding, group treks and special multi-day adventures, using Sections II, III and IV.
